The Importance Of Dimensions When Choosing Office Desks

When you are considering what new commercial furniture to buy for your business, there will be several factors that you need to take into account.

The first, and most obvious, is determining exactly what pieces of office furniture you require.

If one of those happens to be one or more office desks, then from that there will be several variables that must be considered before pinpointing the specific desk or desks you are going to buy.

The variables for office desks fall mainly into two categories.

The first is the aesthetics of the desk. Whilst a desk is primarily purchased to serve a useful purpose in your office, there is also nothing wrong with wanting the desks that you buy to look great and to visually fit in well with the other office furniture that you have.

Thankfully, there is no shortage of choices when it comes to desk styles and appearances, including materials and colours.

The other variables fall under the category of practicalities. In other words, you want desks that are genuinely going to be useful and help, rather than hinder, those using them.

For example, there is little point in buying huge executive desks for those working in a busy call centre, and likewise, a simple desk with no drawers is of little use to the PA of a company’s CEO.

Also coming under the umbrella of practical matters is the dimensions of the desk you are buying and, given that buying desks with the wrong dimensions can lead to all kinds of undesirable issues, we thought it would be useful to focus on this subject. We hope you agree.

Office Desk Dimensions 101

When choosing desks for your business, your selection will include the dimensions of those desks and that will mean selecting the width, height, and depth of each desk.

The width is the measurement from left to right when facing the desk, the depth is the measurement from the front to the back of the desk, and the height is the measurement from the floor to the top surface of the desk.

Now, that might all seem very basic, and we agree it is, but you would be amazed how many desks arrive at an office only to be found to not be suitable, or to not even fit where they are needed, due to mistakes made when specifying the height, width and depth of a desk when being ordered.

So, please do not underestimate the importance of getting these dimensions correct and accurate.

Office Desk Width

Most office desks will be between 800 mm and 2,000 mm wide although you may find the occasional office desk that is slightly narrower or wider.

Factors to consider related to width include the space available for the desk, and what use the desk has in the office where it will be located including how many users will be sitting at the desk.

Office Desk Depth

There are likely to be fewer variations in the depth of the office desks you are considering, with almost all of them being either 600 mm deep, or 800 mm deep.

Again, the space available will be a consideration as will whether you want to provide more room for users to stretch their legs in which case an 800mm desk would be more suitable.

Office Desk Height

Desk heights have even less variation with the vast majority of them at a height that measures 725 mm to 780 mm.

This height is the industry standard and allows almost all office chairs to fit under them, as well as being suitable for workers of all sizes too.

One option that does alter desk height is a standing desk, and these can be adjusted to heights ranging from 640 mm to 1,400 mm.
